My younger sister was blessed with the long, thick lashes in the family. I remember the first time she came downstairs with mascara on her blond lashes at about twelve years old… my dad nearly hit the roof. When your father threatens to lock you up, that’s how you know your beauty trick is working.*
*Note: This test also works with push-up bras, new heels, and other subtle feminine tricks that don’t throw you over the edge into Whoreville.
The only thing that my lashes have in common with hers is that they’re blond. Mine are sparse and thin. Woe is me. I have tried everything: primer before mascara application, a million coats from three different wands, and once I even tried lash extensions which I would never recommend to anyone. Awful.
Then my sister recommended They’re Real by Benefit. Considering I felt like I was having the conversation with Bambi’s girlfriend, Faline, I decided to give it a shot. Sure enough, the first application was a struggle. The wand is rubbery and oddly shaped, and new mascara is always a little too liquid to really grip the lashes. But there was definitely a difference. One of my male roommates even asked me if I was wearing that “eyelash stuff.” I consider this a triumph seeing as I’m fairly certain I have worn mascara every day that he has known me.
It doesn’t clump. It goes on smoothly. And it really does volumize and extend your lashes, no matter how meager they were to begin with.
Give it a go… you won’t regret it!
