Back in fifth grade, I went through a (ridiculously bratty) phase where I insisted on wearing only Calvin Klein jeans. I suppose I was an early bloomer in realizing that all denim isn’t created equal. Luckily for my mother, she has always been an incredible bargain hunter, and found a shop that was dealing little girls size 8s with that beautiful CK logo stamped inside. They were as ill-fitting as most mid-90s pants and only came in two washes, but when I was wearing those babies during recess I would have sworn I was channeling Kate Moss.
My love affair with denim had officially begun.
Over the years I’ve jumped into denim trends with gusto. At the turn of the millennium I was your typical tween, idolizing the dance moves, fashion and lifestyles of Britney, Christina and J-Lo. Their jeans were covered in sparkles and had tears backed with lace. You never would have found them wearing a rise high enough to accommodate a fly longer than one inch. Christina even sang, “tight hip-huggers, low fo-sho.” I mean, could they have gotten any cooler? As painstaking as these styles are looking back, at the time they really couldn’t have been any more fabulous.
My how the jean has matured in the last few years! Whether you’re wearing a pair of staple dark-denim skinnies with a blazer at work, or rocking a pair as a sexy statement in a colour or print, there is no denying the once epitome of casual-weekend-wear has evolved. And we thank the fashion Gods!
I’m obsessed with the easy, breezy new line from Frame Denim – I think I might have to pop out to grab myself a new little basic to kick off 2014.
